Chapter 1 :

The story is about a Delhi boy named Sameer Mishra, who is known as Sam to his friends. He wanted to become a stand- up comedian since his childhood. He was famous in his school and among his friends for his jokes and funny poetry and his videos on his YouTube page got many likes and views. He took the name ‘The Desi Dude’ as his jokes revolved around the life of a native rustic guy, who sees new and peculiar things in urban areas and he used colloquial language in his jokes. But he faced firm resistance from his father for not getting high scores in the exams. His family was facing huge financial crisis, which made his father’s scoldings bitter each day. He goes to Mumbai along with his friend Harish Shukla (who is also the narrator of the story) after the board exams, to get rid of his father and pursue his career in comedy. Harish was affectionately called Harry by his friends and Sameer and he went to Mumbai to pursue his career in law at the Maharashtra National Law University. Both the boys stayed together in a rented flat in Mumbai. Sameer met a man named Anil Shinde, who launched him in various local shows and functions. However the man turned out to be a villain as he used to take all the credit of his entire performance and charge a huge commission from the amount earned by Sameer. He ultimately broke all the ties with Shinde and contacted various organisers of Mumbai he knew by then to give him a chance to perform. He got an opportunity to perform at MNLU, where Harish studied. However the news of his father’s death due to cardiac arrest came on the day of his performance. Sameer had to go to Delhi to perform his last rites. He returned and again started hunting for opportunities to perform. He even worked in a movie theatre as a part- time worker. He finally got a call from a coffee manufacturing firm, which was launching its product in India. He was asked to talk funny things on the stage in English to show the exotic nature of the coffee. Sameer worked very hard to prepare a performance in English and it was a grand success for him. He started getting offers from local advertisers for endorsing their products. One day Harish’s mother called him and insisted him to get a separate rented flat for himself as Sameer’s habit of coming home very late and a haphazard routine would have a detrimental effect on his studies. He tried to convince his mother to allow him to stay with Sameer, but his mother was adamant. Next day, Sameer himself told Harish that he found a new rented flat for himself and he wanted to shift over there so that Harish could focus more on his studies. Both the friends parted their ways to pursue their respective career. Sameer started focusing on his physic and looks and he joined a gym to develop his muscles. One day their old friend Himanshu called Harish and informed him that he was doing journalism at Bharatiya Vidyapeeth and he came to Mumbai for an internship at a new media house. Eventually, Harish got a job of Assistant Legal Advisor at a company based in Bangalore. When his final exams got over, he went to meet the Desi Dude at his new rented flat. They chatted for a long time and had their lunch together. Sameer informed Harish that he gave an audition at Splitsvilla, in which he got selected. He left Mumbai to participate in the stunt- based competition. But surprisingly, Harish received a call from him a few weeks after he left for the show. Sameer requested him to immediately come to his flat. When he went to his flat, Sameer informed him that a girl named Shalini Verma, who was also a participant of the show cheated him terribly by leaking a video showing their intimate moment, which led to his eviction from the show. Sameer was heart- broken. The news channels were filled with news against him. Harish consoled him and he got an idea to prove his friend innocent. He contacted Himanshu and asked him to find out any information about Shalini in the newspapers and magazines or from her friends and relatives. Fortunately, he dug out detailed information about her character and history, which was totally awful. Sameer managed to obtain the CCTV footage showing Shalini installing a secret camera inside a flower vase. Next day, the media house in which Himanshu was interning flooded the channel with information about Shalini. There was a special screening in which the Desi Dude was sitting alone in front of a white background and revealing the CCTV footage and the whatsapp chats between both of them. The media channel’s TRP shot to a great height. Though it was getting many threats from her father, who was the Managing Director of a reputed company, the news channel didn’t stop its campaign. The Desi Dude’s YouTube, Facebook and Instagram fans launched an online poll to pressure the organisers of Splitsvilla to cancel the eviction of the Desi Dude from the show. The organisers apologised to him and called him back to the show and removed Shalini from it. He ultimately became the winner of the reality show. He became a national superstar after the scandal and winning the reality show. He got offers to work in many Hindi daily soaps and got a break into the Bollywood under the banner of the Rajshree Production. On the other hand, Harish’s joining date to his job came nearer and he had to depart for Bangalore. Sameer purchased a new car and came to his PG in it to drop him to the railway station. At the station, he revealed that when Harish was talking to his mother over the phone, he happened to hear their conversation about changing his room. Sameer had immediately searched a new rented flat for himself and pretended that he himself had the desire to change the PG to focus on his career. Harish felt ashamed but Sameer convinced him that he didn’t feel bad about it. The train arrived and Harish departed for Bangalore. He got a rent- free accommodation from his company. He met a girl named Madhuri Tripathi in Bangalore, who used to work in the logistics department of a travel agency. They fell in love and married each other. Himanshu attended their wedding ceremony but Sameer couldn’t. However, he sent a nice gift for the couple through courier. Harish and Madhuri purchased a flat there and had a son, whom they named Sagar Shukla. In the epilogue, it is shown that Harish, Madhuri and their son Sagar travel in a taxi in Mumbai to attend a reunion of the three guys along with their families. They found that the Desi Dude purchased a luxurious bungalow in Juhu. It was surrounded by lush green lawn and a Range Rover was parked outside it. A female attendant ushered Harish’s and Himanshu’s family inside the house. They saw a group of secretaries sitting with laptops and telephones on their desks and they were fixing and cancelling various shows of Sameer. The families were welcomed by Sameer’s mother. It is revealed that his house was decorated with many expensive home accessories. There was a large portrait of his father hanging on the wall. The Desi Dude entered into the drawing room. He looked more muscular and sophisticated, but his way of talking and body language were same as before. His mother took the ladies and the kids along with her to show the entire house. In the meantime, the men were sitting together and chatting and pulling each other’s leg. The story ends with Harish looking at the Filmfare magazine with many pictures of the Desi Dude, which was kept on the tea table, and smiling.
